The FAST® Power Rankings Presented by COMP Cams® USMTS/USRA Power Rankings
By: Sam Stoecklin
It's been predicted among our voters that one day RT would rise to the top and this week it happens as Ricky Thornton, Jr., captures the top spot on this week's version of the USMTS/USRA FAST® Power Rankings Presented by COMP Cams.
In taking over the top spot, Thornton brings to an end Dillard's five-week run at the top after a spectacular weekend that included two big USMTS victories, one at 'The Cage' and the other as the weekend wrapped at I-35 Speedway in Winston, Missouri. Oh, and did we mention, his other finish was second!
Dillard slips into the second position this week after another solid weekend that included a bit of bad luck at Lakeside Speedway late into the race. Finishes his USMTS weekend up with a podium finish at I-35 Speedway.
Several voters elevated Johnny Scott in their rankings this week and therefore reward J Scott with an overall third-place ranking this week. J Scott's move into third this week marks the highest he's been on the top 20 since being ranked number one during the final week of March 2014, thanks in part to a pair of weekend top-three finishes.
Stormy Scott inches up to the number four rank this week hot on the heels of his 38th career USMTS win, which came at Lakeside Speedway after Brother Johnny had a run-in with a lapped car in the race's late stages. Stormy also ran strong at I-35 and had the lead at the 'Cage until, like his brother had a run-in with a lapped car while leading the event.
The Z-Man, Zack VanderBeek returns to the top-five this week for the first time since the final ranking of 2016. VanderBeek's VanderBuilt seems to improve with each and every event he races in. Last weekend he posted finishes of second, fourth, and sixth at I-35 Speedway, where he came from 21st on the grid!
The second half of the top ten includes inactive drivers Ryan Gustin and Jason Hughes, who both fall out of the top five at numbers six and seven respectively this week.
Lucas Schott scored a runner-up finish at the Deer Creek Speedway season-opener and sits in the eighth spot this week. Jake Gallardo broke the bank this past weekend at Southern New Mexico speedway scoring wins not only in his Late Model but into he Modified as well, his other Mod finishes were both runner-up outings.
Rodney Sanders rounds out the top ten this week after posting a pair of top-ten performances in Lance Town's car during USTMS Central Region action.
RC Whitwell gained the attention of voters this week with his USMTS showings and his win at Humboldt Speedway over Jason Hughes and flies into the top 20 this week at number 13.
Zane DevilBiss scored a win at Southern New Mexico Speedway and ran well on the other two nights of the Spring Fling and moves up three spots this week to land at number 14. Jason Cummins rides into the top 20 this week at number 18 after capturing the victory at Deer Creek Speedway.
Terry Phillips was somewhat quiet on the recent USMTS tour but still finished well enough to re-enter this week's top 20 in the number 19 position.
Kerry Davis, Brian Williams, and Ryan Middaugh just missed this week's top 20 as they slip from the top portion of the rankings. Thirty-six drivers found their way onto voter sheets this week, down from 45 last week.
Voters just missing the top 20 included: Tyler Wolff, Darron Fuqua, Fito Gallardo, Jackie Dalton, C.A. Nix, Philip Houston, Josh Angst, Joe Duvall, Chase Junghans, Ryan Middaugh, Bumper Jones, Kerry Davis, Brian Williams, Trevor Latham, Logan Robertson, and Troy Taylor.
The USMTS/USRA FAST® Power Rankings Presented by COMP Cams will return again next week with an all-new top 20. We'll keep our eye on the weather situation again this week and will be sure to gather all the results we can find for our voters to use for choosing their top-ranked drivers.
While you're waiting, be sure to have a look at our extensive library of on-demand video and race highlights from the recently completed USMTS Central Region swing through Missouri and Kansas. There's also plenty of on-demand action from the world of Late Model racing around the U.S.

RankPriorDriver Name
13Ricky Thornton
Moved him to my top spot for the first time, really ran well this weekend. Scored two USMTS wins over the weekend. With the success he's had this past weekend he's definitely at the top of my charts. One voter confesses, "I am shocked to be doing this right now, but it can't be denied that Thornton is the hottest driver on tour at the moment, so I have to put him at the top."
21Cade Dillard
Was just a tick behind Ricky this weekend, moved him to second, but it's really close. No wins but consistent top 5 performances. Cade didn't run as well as he has this past weekend with the USMTS, but I look for him to turn it around. I think something being overlooked is the strong run he had going at Lakeside until a late-race flat tire. There's no need to hit the panic button over a non-win weekend!
37Johnny Scott
Johnny was consistent this past weekend. Unfortunate run-in at Lakeside with lapped car sees a probable win fade from sight. One voter says, "Despite his weekend misfortunes, I placed him higher this week in my rankings, hey, at least he raced!"
45Stormy Scott
After Johnny departs, Stormy takes over with the win at Lakeside. Watch out for Stormy the rest of the way out. Finally got the monkey off his back with the win at Lakeside.
58Zack VanderBeek
Shaking up my rankings this week. Second, fourth and sixth -- great weekend for Zack! Impressive in the new VanderBuilt. His win is around the corner. Stellar drive from 21st to 6th at I-35!
62Ryan Gustin
While inactivity is negative this week, his KOA win cannot be forgotten and has to be factored in. The Reaper is still a top three power player. His no-show weekend led to several voters with no choice but to move him down some on the rankings.
74Jason Hughes
Second at Humboldt but was a USMTS no-show, moved him down the list this week. Voters left a little perplexed after "weekend off."
86Lucas Schott
Lucas picked up a 2nd at the Creek this past weekend. He'll be at the top before we know it.
99Jake Gallardo
One Mod win and two Late Model wins at SNMS, three top two Mod finishes during the Spring Fling.
1010Rodney Sanders
Looked good in Lance Town's GRT ride with 10th and 5th place finishes to show for between Atchison and Lakeside.
1111Mitch Keeter
Finishes third to Whitwell and Hughes at Humboldt. Still a force in the Midwest.
1213Dereck Ramirez
Strong Top 5 in Winston. Ramirez is looking for just a little more speed to be a contender night in and night out.
13NewRC Whitwell
The new pairing with the Wolffs' "Lobo Racing" team seems to be the right fit for Whitwell. Had some "under the radar" wins at Salina High Banks the past few weeks, then had some notable moments this weekend finishing on the podium at Lakeside and topping Hughes for the win at Humboldt. Great to see things finally clicking for RC!
1417Zane DeVilbiss
A win at SNMS - Three wins and 3 second place finishes in his 6 nights of racing so far this year.
1515Jim Moody
Jim is going to pick up a lot of W's this year. One voter even says, "I look for him to be at the top of the USRA point standings this year." You have to witness this driver in person at CMS to appreciate just how fast and hooked up he is right now in this car, simply put, on a rail right now!
1612Travis Saurer
Now trails Whitwell and Wolff in USMTS RoY points. Set to finish out the Southern Region and compete in the Northern Region, so look for him to possibly regain the lead if things go right.
1714Chris Brown
Expected to return to action in the coming weeks to finish up the Southern Region.
1818Jason Cummins
He will have a good year as he will be racing a lot with USRA. He will be high in the rankings by the end of the season, mark my word. Takes the win at Deer Creek Speedway.
1919Terry Phillips
Phillips is certainly performing at under par for his standards in a Mod but still had two top 10's this weekend.
2015Jake Timm
Podium finish at Deer Creek amongst a stellar field, as always.
